What is robotic surgery?
First robotic cholecystectomy (gallbladder surgery) was performed using robotic systems in 1997 and it quickly became widespread in general, urological, gynecological and cardiac surgeries.
In the Da Vinci robotic surgery system, the surgeon performs the operation with a small channels called 'ports’, just like in laparoscopic surgery. The surgical instruments of the Da Vinci robot simultaneously apply the commands of the surgeon at the console.
The surgeon sits on this console and sees the tissues in three-dimensional 3D resolution and up to 20 times larger, manages the robot with console arms and foot pedals. In addition to the advantage of the surgical console providing three-dimensional and magnified images, the surgeon performing the operation allows him to complete the operation without being tired and without loss of concentration, even in long operations. Also Da Vinci extinguishes the possibility of hand tremors.
Surgical instruments of the robot are very fine and sensitive instruments. That’s why surgery can be performed with minimal damage to the tissues. Da Vinci method provides great convenience in operations where any tissue or organ will be removed, and in cases requiring surgical repair of sick tissues.
Da Vinci has a robotic surgery 3D imaging system. Thanks to this system, images can be taken from the deepest points of the body with high resolution and up to 20 times magnification. In image transfer, even if the camera approaches the deep tissues, there is no image loss. Thus, the surgeon can see all the details of the operation with depth perception.
Since the nerves and vessels are displayed in more detail, the risk of damage to these tissues is less.
Robotic arms have much better and pinpoint performance than the mobility of the human wrist. Thanks to the 540 – degree rotation of the hand surgical interventions can be performed easily in narrow and small areas. It also provides convenience in cutting, holding and stitching.
The arms with sensitive movement eliminate the hand tremors that can be seen and allow surgeons to work more comfortably.
Since the surgeon sits at the console and performs the surgery, he is less tired. Thus, in long-term surgeries, the doctor can focus better on the operation and there is no loss of concentration.
The skin incisions made for the robotic arms to enter the area to be operated are smaller than those made in normal surgeries. The small size of the incisions reduces the risk of infection and the ache and pain that the patient will feel after the surgery is less. At the same time, scar formation is minimal and hospitalization is shortened. There is very little blood loss in the operations.
